Iam getting P0430 codes. This is emissions not up to par on bank 2. Repair manual indicates a bad cat. Auto X-ray indicates a temp of 1400+ at highway speeds. Will gutting the cat clear this up or will it continue to give codes? Where is the best blace to buy a new cat? Most tell me it is a dealer item ($700). I have no problems running with cats on as long as I con't have to pay an arm and a leg for them.
I would go ahead and try to gut the cats and see if that clears up your problem. I have no problems with setting codes on my car, but I can't say whether it will cause them on yours as it is different year. If your cats are bad anyway, then what do you have to lose. If gutting them causes you problems you can always buy new cats anyway. I'm sure someone can give you more of an idea of what the effects (if any) of gutting cats on a '96 would be.
Gutting the cat will more than likley take care of the codes. No need to pay the $700 to your dealer (off topic - ever notice the the people who sell you drugs and auto service are both called dealers? Makes one think). I had my cat replaced with a high flow and pre-cats removed by a local muffler shop for $260 total. Got to shop around.
Check with TPIS, their Random Tech. high-flow cats are around $200-$225. My TPIS catalog is 2000, so they didn't list a cat for '96 Vette; by they likely do.
Since I'm having my motor rebuild, i went ahead and dropped bothe the catand the y pipe. I found a y pipe at MAD for around$200.00(no pre-cats on this on) and $150.00 for the cat. One of the local shops said that they will beat that and I havn't started looking yet!
Good luck
I believe there is a federally required 8 year 80,000 mile warranty for catalytic converters, check the owners manual though. I had both of mine replaced by a dealer at 79,000 for free. So you will probably want to do that if you qualify.
Otherwise gut and get O2 sims or get headers and aftermarket cats for the same money as the stock cats. If you gut the cats you will need O2 sims to prevent codes, they're like $80 a pair from IRS.

If you are really in the mood to save money, try a stock used cat. You may pay around $50 or less, at a salvage yard. I got a compete Y pipe, with pre cats, very good used cat, connectors, all for $50. They looked like new. Prices from my GM parts guy, with a discount, was around $1200 for new replacements. A good salvage yard should be able to check the interchange book and see what will swap over. Otherwise, lots of Corvette salvage yards have those things sitting around. Better yet, a swap meet. You have many under $700 choices. Whatever.
