I dont know any of them. A freind had some issues with the independent though. Ive had the car for 19 months and this is the first issue. I do maintenance myself. The nearest shop that I really trust is over 100 miles away and thats creates a time issue.
Therein lies the issue. Who is this person your friend had issues with? Was it the shop or one particular mechanic? Did the company fix it? I agree any mechanic can have an "oops" day. That said, too many and there is a problem the shop should address. If the shop refuses to stand behind a mistake, that is an issue with the shop.

They kept his car 3 months to do a valve job on a Mini. And the bill was around $4000.
Some 30 years ago I worked at Volvo/VW/Honda dealership and we charged hourly (NOT flat rate). I was a good shop and we had clientele form all over. I have also worked at other conventional dealerships that are flat rate, and in IMHO the customer usually gets screwed with flat rate. Either the tech completes the job under time and the shop reaps in the profit (at customer's expense) and/or the tech is "under-the-gun" to work fast (sloppy) to make his paycheck. Bring in a crappy, rusty shitbox and the extra time needed to make it right isn't gonna happen. It may "all even out at the end" but it doesn't make for good repair work.
The only real benefit is the customer is shocked BEFORE the work is initiated.
