Hey people,
What did you use to install the harmonic balancer on your L98?
I stopped by autozone in town tonight to inquire about buying or borrowing the loaner installer tool and that store didnt even have a loaner for it,or even stocked or carried them for sale on the shelves.
Im like wth? They stock/sell a new balancer for this car but dont even carry the tool for install??...yet they do have the pullers though...weird eh?This tool was even on their "Autozone Tool Loaner Chart mat" that they have on their counter tops.Their computer even showed its not listed.
I may try Napa or someone tomorrow but wanted to get any ideas in case I cant get the proper tool. Can I use a bolt similar to the one off the damper center but Longer in length and use a larger washer to push the damper on?(Just realized we probaly dont even have a store that sells the type of bolt Id need..this town doesnt have much here...)
Usually a QUALITY parts store will have one or at least be able to order one for you. It is risky to tap it on with a hammer and block of wood or a deadblow hammer, but if you only go on far enough to get the stock bolt started a good 4-5 turns, then you can press it on the rest of the way with the bolt. If you have a 1/2" drive impact, it will go a lot easier. The best way is to get a tool or at least a longer bolt.
Thanks for the replies so far everyone...65Z01,Im kinda laughing because even our sears store doesnt carry the tools Id need....its a small town out here.I may have to end up using the Longer bolt homemade install if no one carries what I need.
Or,If all else fails,Ill go to Bowling Green which is 45 minutes away and look there...
Im sure theres gotta be a tool in BG somewhere.
If not,I know summit racing sells this tool...I think I want one for my tool box anyways...would always come in handy for future jobs.
:)

Bill,
I just looked at your location. You ain't kiddin'! I'm from Holland Mi., and my wife works for Johnson Controls here. About 4 years ago she went to Glasgow, to train people at a plant that JC bought there, for 6 weeks. I drove down every weekend! I didn't have my dream(corvette) yet, but I still went to the Corvette Museum. We spent a lot of time in Bowling Green! There was a little dirt track located just outside of Glasgow, and that was fun. I used to race stock cars, and love to visit the dirt tracks when I can. You did have a movie theater too didn't you? Anyhow, good luck with the balancer, and remember don't blink you might miss it!
Thats an idea scorp..I may be able to use my puller in reverse,IF,I can get a slightly longer center bolt. The puller I had was a gear/steering wheel puller and using a shorter center bolt from a Tie rod puller that fit in this puller as well,I used it to pop the balancer off without having to disconnect the power steering metal lines. It cleared everything easy down there.
I could possibly use this puller head, remove the current center bolt and put it back on to the new damper with the 3 outer screws and use a new longer center bolt and big washer to pull the balancer on the crank.
Ill keep ya all posted.
:)
Hey Sinister,
Yeah thats Glasgow for me...lol..not too much here but its slowly growing.
I do live outside the town a few miles and only lived down here for about a year...its a big change from living in NY most of my life, then Indianapolis for 3 years then down here.
Im so used to being able to drive a few minutes to get something...these days, gotta make a trip somewhere past the cow fields to find something most people never heard of.
Yet at the same time,I love it...cant complain too much...But also kinda funny to see somebody online Knows Just what im talking about...lol...small world in many ways eh?
:)
