A few days ago I started my car and I heard a loud bang and then it died. After that the starter would spin, but the engine wouldn't crank over. After pulling the starter I noticed the shaft broke off and fell in the bellhousing. Doe these cars have a dust cover or some other access besides dropping everything? Thanks!
Which car, the '90 or the ZR1. I am assuming the '90 if you were able to pull the starter. They do have dust shields in front of the flywheel. There is not a whole lot of room once you take it off though. You may be able to use a magnet wand to get the gear and any other large debris out the hole in the side of the bellhousing by the slave cylinder. You will want to remove the slave cylinder too before attempting this route.

Its on my ZR1. My starter is in the intake valley and I've already pulled everything out. I've fished with a magnet in the valley opening, but I've only managed to fail. :yesnod:
