Your tachometer lead plugs into the distributor cap connecting to the bottome side of the HEI coil. With thise unplugged your tach will read 0 at all times. The filter is located on this lead. The lead is a single brown wire. The tach filter looks like a small aluminum cylinder with a screw tab coming off the side of it where it gets bolted into the upper/left bolt on the bellhousing.
Can you explain what side of the lead was busted? Perhaps if it is the side that goes to the distributor and it has grounded itself on some metal it may light up the entire tach. I am not sure.
