I think I at least found the ECM. (tan rectangular box under passenger side. I see 2 set of wire harnesses going into the ECM. Looks like ECM is attached one bolt on front, but 2 harder to reach ones toward back. How do I check the PROM Code, so I can get Ed Wright Fast Chip built for my Vette? (btw-some have said to just get a fan switch, but for me, it seems like less work to just get a chip. I hope.
Re: How do I find 4-digit PROM Code on ECM? (dbwade36)
Remove the wire plugs from the ECM. Remove 2 screws and the ECM will drop down. Remove the plate covering the prom and read the 4 letter code. Your neck and back will hurt after doing this
Re: How do I find 4-digit PROM Code on ECM? (dbwade36)
Undo the two 10mm bolts on the end of that tan plastic retainer; the ECM will drop down. Find the 2" x 4" alum plate on the side of the ECM; remove it. You'll see a blue plastic piece (the MemCal) about 1" x 3" held in by clips on each end; pry the clips back and remove the MemCal.
Remove the blue cover over the brown chip holder; the largest chip is the EEPROM. The 4-letter BIN code will be on the chip.
You may have a 3-letter BIN; mine was AMJ 0499. (Disregard the numbers).
Don't try to pry the EEPROM out of the MemCal. It's soldered in.
Re: How do I find 4-digit PROM Code on ECM? (dbwade36)
I may be able to save you some time on finding all the codes on your prom. Here is part of an email I sent to Jeff Kopp when he did a chip for me to turn on the fans sooner. If that is all you are wanting to do, call Jeff, you will save a TON of money. Anyhow, here is the info from my chip. I have an iron headed 86 auto. Judging from your website you have iron heads too on your 86. Give Jeff a call tomorrow at Superior Chevy.
Here are the numbers off the Prom. I will put it as I saw it on the chip.
Numbers on the prom:
DELCO
BOA
1728
014P 5DBB
40581
AA8627B
Numbers on the 2 small chips below the prom:
16055375
16055376

yup, I want my fans on sooner w/o a switch. Chip seems easy. What is Jeff's number? Sounds like a good deal to me. I am sure your info is about the same as mine.

If you don't feel like breaking your back and neck, try finding/paying someone with a scanner and read the rom's ID which should match the printed label on the chip.
