Default question on changing the opti

i am a new vette owner only had my 95 coupe for about a month now and with the good luck i have my opti decided to go out. i have already gotten the water pump out of the car and had a couple questions about removing the opti. keep in mind as soon as i got the water pump off i stopped working on the car. first do i need to remove the harmonic balancer. from the directions i have it looks like i will. there seems to be a screw behind it that i need to get to.is there a way to do this without removing the balancer. my second question is there a special tool that i need to get the scews out. in my direction it says something about a tool needed (i would tell you exactly what it says but the directions are at home). thanks in advance for any help. please give me any tips you have too that may help me finish the job
thanks
brad

Welcome to the forum.

This is not a very tough job to do, however, you WILL need to take the balancing pully off. There are 3 screws that hold the opti-park to the block, nothing special. I believe that they are 10mm screws. When you pull this thing, you will notice that it is completely idiot proof. The connection between the camshaft and the distributor is "keyed" so that you can not put it on up-side down...or off by a couple degrees. In other words, no force should be used when putting this new opti on. Remember to clean clean clean while you have the opti out of there, and you will be golden! Enjoy.

Welcome to the forum.

Remove the 3 bolts that hold the pulley on, it should just slide off, but most are rusted very tightly in place, get under the car and hold a piece of dowel rod to the inner part of the balancer pulley, and hit it with a small sledge hammer or something to break the rust loose...it isn't bad once you've done it once

In addition to the previous informative posts, you might consider replacing the water pump with a new one, if your vette has been driven sufficient (40K+) miles to warrant a new pump. Since you already have the pump out, it is just a precautionary measure that might reduce the chances of you going back in the engine compartment sooner than later. I'm sure there are Forum members than can provide you with a source for a new pump at a reasonable cost.

You might consider plug wires & plugs at this time also. It is so much easier now with those things out of the way! Just a thought........ :yesnod:  :yesnod:  :yesnod:  :yesnod:  :yesnod:  :yesnod:
