OK, so here goes a subjective question that I'd like to have an objective discussion about, and/or real experience. And, let me say now, thank you for your time.
I have an 89 six speed coupe I'm looking to replace the original 275/40-17 Good Year tires. It looks like the replacement selections for my criterion are becoming sparse.
I would like to stay with a match set all the same size, summer performance tire (no all seasons), and have the tires sent to me, such as through Tire Rack or Tire Direct. I can mount and balance.
In the past,m I have used, and liked, the performance and price of Continental Extreme DW tires, but it looks like they aren't available in the size (275/40-17) any longer.
So if you may, please leave me some objective information. I'd like to make a smart purchase.
Once again, THANK YOU, and here's to a prosperous 2017!
Go to Summitracing.com and check out the Mickey Thompson tires. Good prices and I've had them on the rear of my '86 for two years now and really like them.
Tire Rack has 22 tires listed in 275/40-17s. You just need to decide what level of performance and what weather conditions you'll be driving your C4 in.

- pull up the size and start shopping. IMO, the best bang for the buck for a weekend driver would be the BFG's. FWIW, check the customer survey below -
i'll be buying tires for my 90 in the next month or so, and they're my first choice. years ago, I ran BFG comp t/a's (in 16 inch size) on my 85 - no issues and decent 40K mile tire. I've purchased about 12 sets of tires from the tire rack over the years, and never a problem. order on Monday, and on my door step Wednesday. local mount and balance and it's good to go!
I just had Discount Tire mount a set of Nitto 555s on my 91. I have previously run BFG Comps, Michelin Pilot Sports, Goodyear Eagles... and am impressed with Nittos. Would have loved to get another set of Pilots but for the price the 555s perform nearly as well. Great grip, quiet and a comfortable ride
Another vote for the Nitto 555. Just put them on last week. Very pleased with the ride. Discount Tire did the full set of 4 for around $800 w/all the warranty and roadside assistance bells and whistles.
i got 4 new Nitto 555 from Walmart online for 527 bucks had them mounted all in was around 600 bucks best deal i could find on them. i will say i got a 10% discount on the tires so that didn't hurt. after looking around for awhile and some reading for the money they sound like good tires.

I went with the Nittos, they seem to liked here. I purchased them from Discount Tire Direct, $550 w/new valve stems. I won't be driving on them until April
