Default Awful Rattle

I have a rattle that is coming from the passenger side rear, between the wheel well and the door. I cannot find it, I replaced the sway bar bushings to urethane because they were rotted and loose but that did no solve the issue. Since I was there I also replaced the dog bone bushings.

I have looked underneath, inside the door, and in the rear speaker compartment but cannot find anything. Is there anything that might be loose between the fiberglass and the frame?

Exhaust, u-joints, batwing. Could be a lot of things. Best suggestion I can make is get under there and start shaking things and see what moves that shouldn't.

Did you check the "anti-Rattle" clips on the brake pads? They are an "S" shaped about 3/8" wide metal piece that clips/slides onto the brake pad to keep tension on it and prevent rattles.

When one breaks, a very noisy rattle can set up. Common failure.

Just a little more INFO please, is it Tinny back ground noise or a Solid feel though the seat kind of noise.

is the car a Convertible the X brace can make all sorts of noise.
some the best results I have gotten with the I can't find this noise search is to use a rubber Mallet and give thumps around the bottom of the car and components (yes it makes my skin crawl hitting a Vett with a Hammer too)but it works

Check your shocks mine sounded like I had a box of marbles over bumps.
They were bad inside.

I replaced the shocks about a year and half ago with Bilsteins, they didn't seem to rattle when I checked. Brake pads would not make this sound. It sounds like a large metal piece inside the side of the car near the hatch. I does not sound like it is coming from underneath. It is worse over bumps.

You may have replaced the shocks a year ago but it doesn't cost anything to give a tug on with a wrench, so it sounds like something solid. as Weird as this may sound I have seen the Hatch Struts loosen up and make a racket, the bottom Ball Mount is screwed on. Open the hatch and have someone hold pressure off the strut or prop up with a stick if loose you may be able to twist the Chrome Piston and tighten ball mount both on the shaft and on the Body if loose

OP I had a rattle in my 1984 like you are describing. I replaced the Stabilizer bushing and checked all dogbone bushings. It turned out being the spare tire carrier bolt was loose. The noise was worse going over bumps and going slow on rough washboard roads.

I tightened the bolt and noise was gone. Good luck with your rattle. Hope this helps

I had the worst rattle in the same exact spot. It turned out the top bolt that secured the shock to the mount had worked loose and had fallen out. It was the top of the shock banging around.

I had the same situation on my 82. I hunted around for weeks with no luck and dreaded every bump in the road.

By accident while I was checking U joints I began tugging and pushing on various suspension parts and low-and-behold the upper shock was sloppy and flopping around. A box end wrench took car of that
