I've got a low RPM metallic rattle. I'm guessing it is one of the pre-cats, or a heat shield, but I haven't been able to locate any thing loose, and have a hard time replicating the noise in park or neutral. Is there anything in an automatic transmission like the torque converter or something that might cause a low-rpm rattle. The noise goes away as speed increases, its just as you start moving, less than 10 mph or so.
If the cats are going, should I hear rattling with a rubber hammer test :D
Sounds like a cat, does it sound metallic, only at idle in drive, and go away when you give it any gas or put in neutral? Have someone put it in drive while you lay next to it, and it should be obvious, just did this on one of my jeeps. Good Luck.

That's exactly how my main cat sounded before it was replaced. It was breaking up and as soon as you got on the throttle (for mine it was above 1500rpm) the exhaust would push the broken bits to the back and the rattle would stop.
I have the same rattle on my 87 coupe, at Idle mostly . Every saturday morning I visit the local muffler shop and try something new.
After I replaced my Y-pipe with a new stainless unit it still rattled. It turned out to be the tube from the catalitic converter hitting the floor. The tube I refer to is on the passenger side part of the air pump system. I have added a clamp to the Y-pipe which minimixed the sound, however it has not gone away.
I am curious as to determining the root cause, Is the transmission rubber mount worn or loose?
Is on of the rubber mounts on the exhaust system worn? I had them tightened.
Please help!
There was a thread a while back on this. It might be fuel pump or filter related. I think there was even a recall. BTW I have the same noise seems to be present when started from cold then goes away.

Looks like it is probably the main cat. I checked today ... In gear with the brake on, I had a friend look for the noise. Seems to be coming from the main cat.
The clamp on the AIR tube has been a little loose too, but this noise was much much louder. I'll get that clamp replaced too.
