Those held the old gasket in place and will hold the new one as well. You must pick out the plastic pieces or what I did was use a fine drill bit and drill and pick them out. Make sure you have a rag down as to no pieces fall into the engine. I just power washed my engine today to get all the residue oil off of the block. Looks and runs perfect now..... And no oil smell from leaking oil on the block.

I guess they are to hold the gaskets? I didn't look at the old ones too carefully.
intake runners into the heads look fairly clean; however, throttle body to the intake is incredibly oily, should be dry there. Probably sucking oil from your valve cover, possibly a bad PCV valve ??

PCV valve could definitely stand being replaced.

Protip: Throttle body gasket goes in exactly one way.

I'm in the process of putting things back together. Walmart was out of Mobile 1 5w-30 so that will be the only roadblock.

Looks like a have plenty of oil. My problem is that I need to organize the garage better...

I buttoned up everything and the car started. That's the first good sign. Test drive coming up. Got to get it nice and hot to see if it still smokes or there are other leaks.

Short video of the test drive. No smoke, ran fine. I'll consider that a victory.

Previously when the car was hot I would come to a stop and smoke would billow out from the driver's side. This time? Nothing.

The oil temp and water were both at 204˚F. Outside temp was low 40s.

If you're thinking about doing this work it's a lot easier than it looks. I didn't remove all of the parts that the guy in the video did. I also didn't spend too much time cleaning the intake (on the outside) because I didn't want to have one clean part under the hood and the rest dirty.
