Not sure on your year, but on the 88, it snaps over the rod so you basically pry under the rear edge of it.

it is tricky... and tight...

unlock the door... and start prying at the very leading end.

the metal rod underneith all of that has a 90* bend out at the thumb protrusion.

a pain, really.

it might wanna jump off, too... the best tool is a 90* pick.

Yeah, believe-it-or-not, that plastic slider is officially called a ****, I/S LK Rod. The rod going back to the lock just snaps in the "****". Just pry the big end out a little with a screwdriver and it should just go pop. I hate to say this but it's harder putting it back on than taking it off. But at least you'll have the knowledge of how it came apart by that time.

While you have the door panel off, if you take the screws out from the panel the inside door handle is on, you can spray some undercoating on the inside of the door. Makes it a lot more solid sounding. And check for loose screws that can cause rattles.
