That Harbor Freight transmission jack is a good solid jack It's a screw jack so it will not drift down or leak down like a hydraulic can.

Totally agree. It should be perfect to hold the transmission in position during an engine removal/installation....

It works well with a car on jackstands.
I used that HF scissor trans lift. It worked great. I used it to change out a converter, and replace seals. Because you use a ratchet drive to raise and lower, I was able to guide tranny, change height very gradually as needed, and drop and install trany without help. Great buy.

Related question is it safer to jack up each of the front wheels first then place jack stand? Front and rear same side? Or each rear first?

I put the jack straight below the mirror and it lifts the whole side of the car, set the stands & go do the other side. Easiest way i've found.

Whichever way you go to get it up there, be sure to put stuff under the car (like the tires , so if it does fall, you will have enough room to breath if trapped, but better ,enough room to escape. My sat all winter on jack stands, placed on plywood (did it in the backyard). I then slightly jacked up the tires and put solid concrete blocks under them, then lowered the tires. That way they held just a bit of weight and stayed supported the entire time. It was also a secondary safety attempt. Back in 1964 or so, Dad was using a bumper jack,,, and yes, the car fell on him. He wasn't hurt but was trapped and could barely breath. I heard him telling, and I raised the car using the bumper jack so he could escape. That taught me a never to forget lesson about safety when under a car. Always error on the side of safty.
