Intermittent problem at first (after driven a bit when shut off it wouldn't restart). Now security light stays on and there is no power to starter. Replaced starter, still no change. Please help...
It is an automatic. Yes I have tried to reset the system by unlocking doors with the key. It just stays on constantly. Ultimately I want to fix it, but for now I would like to start it.
I had the same problem on my '84. What you can do is reach under the passenger side dash and unplug the security system control unit (NOT the ECM). It should be mounted on the hush panel (the carpeted piece) usually right in the middle. It has a plug with about 8-10 wires in it. You car should operate normally then. Also, if you want to check your starter relay, it's right behind the drivers information center below the a/c vents-however. I believe if you unplug the control unit, you'll be fine. Should you want to replace it, it's only available used. From what I understand, there are about 3-4 different ones to get, so it would be in your best interest to remove the unit and bring it with you to compare serial numbers.
There is also a fuse you can remove, it to is behind the multiuse panel below the AC outlets. Also you can jump (with same gauge wire) the Neutral Start Switch. This also disconnects the Theft Detent Starter Interrupt Switch. If you go this why, be careful as your car will start in any gear. The switch is located under the drivers Hush Pad to the left of the break peddle. It will have a yellow, green, and a green with a white strip wire. Unplug this and jump the yellow and green wire. If you need I can upload the pictures in my electrical book for your 84.
I've tried the things you've suggested but some of my wires are different colours. If you could please email me the pictures (wiring diagrams) you mentioned, they'd be really helpful. Thanks for you time. James
