Default goofy transmission (post number 2)

My apologies for my first couple of posts being so long.

Here's my second issue with my 1994 stock automatic LT1. The transmission has been acting up for quite some time. I bought the car in 1999, and sometime in 2000 it started developing a weird problem. After driving the car for a significant period of time, the transmission would start sticking in overdrive when stopping. Obviously, this was very annoying as it's kinda hard to start off in a high gear. Pulling the shifter down into first only yielded second gear as first gear is electronically controlled. So I'd start off slowly in second gear a lot.

Last year about this time, the locking mechanism on the torque converter began to fail and would not lock like it was supposed to. So I finally took it to the "expert" local transmission repair shop because we'd heard good things about them (they're actually good, I'm just aggravated at the transmission). They monkeyed with it a couple of times and finally rebuilt the transmission for me for a nice little price to fix all of the above problems. Verily, all was wonderful and peaceful in the world.

Earlier this year it started doing it all again. The first symptom is a failure to downshift into second properly; at 40 to 45 mph, a quick press to WOT should instantly downshift into second gear. "Nay!" says my transmission as it waits a couple of seconds to shift or completely refuses to go into second gear. As this symptom develops, it begins to shift very late into first while stopping. If the transmission is cool and working correctly, it shifts into first at about 8 mph. Otherwise it shifts at a very low speed or when the car is completely stopped, resulting in this awful clunking as it shifts while stopped or moving very slow.

A couple of months ago, the car was doing the whole shebang, sticking in overdrive and the works. The transmission repair shop replaced the Throttle Position Sensor for me (should've done it myself and saved cash). This helped the overall performance of the engine, but it did not fix the transmission problem. The car had a heating issue, so, upon advice from the transmission repair shop owner, we pulled the radiator, had it rodded and cleaned, and drained and flushed the coolant system since the problems were obviously temperature-related. Now the engine stays much cooler than it used to and it never gets hot enough to bring up the problem with it sticking in overdrive. Yet the problem with late downshifts into first and late or no downshifts into 2nd at low speeds still persist. I really think if it goes on long enough, the overdrive issue will rear its ugly head again.

When they rebuilt the transmission, the locking mechanism for the torque converter was actually coming apart and strewing debris in the transmission oil. This was supposedly clogging the valve body and preventing the transmission from working properly when the car heated up. When they rebuilt the transmission and replaced the torque converter, this fixed all the problems. Now that it's popping up again, I'm wondering if the torque converter is going bad or if there is still some debris in the valve body.

Has anyone else ever experienced such a thing? The transmission repair shop keeps trying to suggest other things besides rebuilding the transmission again, I'm thinking because the problems cropped up under their warranty (12 mo./12k miles). My dad and I got the car to run much cooler like they suggested, and they've already replaced the TPS once. What's left? Rebuilding the transmission? Replacing or cleaning the valve body? Selling it and buying a '99 hard top?

Any thoughts or suggestions or otherwise? TIA!!!!!!!
