HI people,
Wanted to make a thread for tomorrow's job on reinstalling the harmonic balancer.
They Keyway Key on the crank was sitting flat and almost flush with a slight rake.....I was putting the new balancer on by hand to set it up and align, but wasnt sure if I had aligned the keyway slot up correctly.
When I took it off,the key on the crank was standing more straight up then flush.
What position is the key supposed to be when installing a new balancer?
Should it be flush, straight up or will the balancer knock it down back flush when installing assuming I aligned it correctly?
Since it moved upwards,I cant push it back down by hand/finger since it will need a little tap with a screwdriver or hammer to make it lay flat again...Theres no instructions in anybook I have to tell me anything about the key position when installing a balancer or if its moving up is normal.Better ask first before acting like I know everything when I dont...lol..

Please excuse the post...I found the answer I needed.Everything went back together perfect.I set the keyway again and the balancer clicked-aligned in place and pressed right on there.
:)

The problem I'm having is this: I can get the balancer on about 1/2 way over the keyway. But, I cannot get the bolt with the washer threaded into the crank. I have "tapped" :smash: on the balancer with a rubber mallet a few times, but the balancer refuses to move any more. I will probably go to the hardware store and get a longer bolt.
Is the way the balancer is acting normal? Shouldn't it gradually move down the crank as it is tapped? :smash:

If it were mine, I wouldn't be tapping!
Try a long stud (same thread as the crank bolt), run that into the crank. Place the balancer on the snout and add a couple of large beefy washers and a nut. Then thread the nut down the stud which will push the balancer onto the crank (should be very very tight fit). To keep the stud from turning add two nuts and tighten them to each other (double nut) further out the stud and hold that with extra hand. If you use the balancer bolt to simply thread into the crank and pull the balancer on...very high risk of stripping the crank threads out-lots of forces are at work there.

They key must be level on the snout. If it has a rake to it, the hub will contact it near the middle of the key and push on it. It won't level the key but will cause it to rotate up in the back as it slides back oh so slightly. The hub should have plenty of clearence to miss hitting the top of the key if it is level.
