I am having my transmission replaced within the next week. There are a few leaks and one of them is from the rear main seal. The mechanic told me the seal is either a split seal or a single seal. If it is the single seal then I am looking at only a few bucks to replace. :D If it is a split seal then I am looking at much more labor due to pulling the oil pan and the crankshaft. How can I find out what kind of seal is in my engine?
Scorp, isnt pulling the tranny for 300 bones kinda cheap? Either way, replacing the rear seal while the tranny is out is the most cost effective way to go.
1 question though...how comfortable are you about letting someone replace the seal if the mechanic didnt know which it was and what all had to be done to do it?

I don't really think so for a mechanic with a lift and proper tools. I can get my tranny out in under 3 hours on my back with only jackstands. It would go much faster up in the air and with a helper.
Actually the mechanic wasn't exactly sure which seal, I only spoke to him over the phone and just brought up the idea of replacing the seal then. He has worked on my vette several times (replaced driveshafts, ball joints, and fixed a major short circuit problem). So I feel very comfortable with him
