Can you buy just this housing or do I need a whole new unit? The unit is pretty expensive I think.
You need the sender minus the fuel pump which you can reuse. I'd find a good used one. There must be a ton of them out there. I'm all for being creative, but yours is done.
Well, I put a dab of solder over the affected area, and bench-tested it. I was seeing resistance correctly and it was only about 1 ohm off from factory-well within a reasonable difference. However, hooking it back up to the car, my fuel gauge still reads full all of the time. Is there something else I can check? Can I check resistance using the wiring harness coming out the top of the sending unit without pulling it out again?
So it turns out the gauge DOES work. Just took a little while to drop off. Drove about 60 miles before it started to go down. So anyway, dab of solder is a quick fix for a broken sender winding, depending on where the break is. I'd still recommend a new unit eventually, but if you're on a tight budget like me, it totally works.
