I believe that you are talking about the water temperature sender. That is the pigtail you are looking for. Auto supplies most likely would have or get you a replacement. Pointed to in red.

Good luck with your restoration.

Make sure you look at the type of connection. I believe that is the sensor that goes to the ECM. There is another coolant temp sender on the other side of the block between 6 & 8 for the temp gauge that has a spade connection. At least that is on my 88.

if you have two coolant temp sensor/switches one of them feeds the auxiliary fan and the other one feeds the ECM its temperature reading. That's my recollection anyways, I just can't remember which is which.

I believe there are actually 3, at least on the 88. One is a temperature sender between #6 & 8 for the temperature gauge, one is a temperature sender between #1 & 3 and the third one on the front above the water pump is a temperature switch for the fan. All three have different type connectors.

OP - You mention a "RESTORATION PROJECT" and then ask questions that you need to know how to confirm "yourself". I'm guessing you don't have a FSM and "restoration" I believe is going to require the FSM and much more! Do you have the FSM? FSM - Factory Service Manual

Water temp sender for gauge on your '87 is rear of RH cylinder head, CTS for the ECM which controls primary fan is front of the intake and IF there's a switch in the LH cylinder head then (so long as it's original) that is for AUX cooling which is a fan in front of the radiator/condenser module.Do you have that AUX FAN?

What is the wire color?

I don't believe there was a running production change in '87 for coolant related senders/sensors.

Are y'all sure the temp sender on the front is not for the EGR system?
