Default Catless Question

I have a Power Effects catback system ordered for my 88, and I plan on changing out the front Y as well since it's got some miles on it, and I need to get rid of my rattly precats anyway.

I've already determined that I'm going to get a precatless front Y, so that's not an issue. What I'm wondering is whether or not I should put a main cat back on there. Emissions testing isn't an issue where I live.

Very small increases or decreases in performance also is not an issue to me. What I'm worried about is whether or not there will be any issues that arise due to changes in back pressure, emissions, etc. I'd like to save a couple hundred bucks if possible, but not if it's going to hurt my car.

If it's going to be alright to eliminate the precats and the main cat, how big of a difference is there going to be between catted and catless, soundwise and performancewise?

Thanks for your feedback.

You could possibly get an EGR code, maybe another from the O2 sensors not getting warm enough.

As far as hurting anything, no. And if you got the O2 problem, then all youd need is a heated O2 sensor, which is cheaper than a Random Tech cat.

Soundwise, with just a straight pipe in place of the main cat, i dont think there will be much in the way of resonance over normal. But if you just put a hollowed pipe in there, you would get more resonance.

Performance-wise might be around 5-10hp from eliminating all the cats.

That's what I needed to know, thanks. I had planned on getting a heated sensor, so hopefully that won't be a problem. Is there anything I can do to keep it from throwing an EGR code?

Definately louder, but the Power Effects system is adjustable to increase or decrease the sound levels for your listening enjoyment. 84 CF 91 ZR-1

I'll probably go ahead and get those precats/cats cut off this week.. another quick question though, for anyone that has done this and is kind enough to help me out.

How likely is it that my oxygen sensor is going to give me fits? And if my oxygen sensor doesn't act up after I cut the precats off, are there any benefits or problems with replacing it with a heated sensor anyway?

Thanks again.

I have removed my precats and added a high flow main. I haven't set off the 02 sensor, but throw a 32 (EGR) every now and then.
