I am going to bypass the vats system in my 86. Measured the ohms and came up with 4012. Key #10 is suppose to be 3740, and key #11 is 4750. Which one would i need? Thanks, Scott
If car starts with key you have' get a 4k ohm resistor. You could go be local dealer part dept and ask them if they would tell you what blank number it is. Then get resistor(s)
You can also take it to any locksmith that does keys and they should be able to tell you which VATS number it is. That is how they make additional keys.
didn't format well pasting, but look at the first line to identify what each column represents. First column is the key identifier, 2d is minimum resistor value and 3d is the maximum value. Others are if you are making up your own resistor pack for that particular value.
I don't know that I've ever seen that documented and of the many I've checked I've never seen one that wasn't within the range of original GM design specification.
OP - How many keys do you have? Did you check all?
I believe that if I were you and I had the value mentioned I'd check with maybe another meter. If another meter validated the value I'd maybe look and see if that maybe there's NOT already a bypass in place. I'd think it's very likely. Do you KNOW that there's NOT a bypass in place?
Bad meter? Maybe most likely Operator error? Who knows
It might be interesting to maybe take your key to a dealer and ask that they "drop it" in their VATS Interrogator. I'd expect likely an ERR.

How are you holding your meter leads to the key? If you are touching with your bare fingers, you may be skewing the results. Meter zeroed?

I tried that and the answer was "it broke and wasn't worth the cost to repair"
just the reality of an obsolete technology
they did say if I figured out what blank I needed they would order it and the cutting would be free
i measured mine and ordered off eBay Home Depot cut for free just have to promise you won't blame them if it doesn't work and since it's free there is no receipt anyway

I was my error, i wrote the decimal down in the wrong spot, Turns out i have key #1, ordered the bypass kit. thanks for the help.

Interesting - the #1 resistance was dropped by GM because of issues with the modules reading the lower resistance of the #1 blank. It's debated often "when" it was actually dropped.
It's good to see you post back - many (maybe most) would have just moved on!!

im hoping it works anyway. my resistance was 420. and the #1 key is suppose to be around 402. hopefully this will work. its just the start. ive got a few gremlins to work out. thanks again
