I'm most likely going to purchase new mufflers within the next few weeks. And i was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the different brands that are out there. Keeping in mind I didn't want to spend a huge amount. thanx
I instaled KBD 2 1/2" ss last year, They give a good from the gut rumble, no resonance, and they not real loud from the side of the road. From in the car they are just loud enough to always be there, When you get on it, they give you that business sound.
I just had a pair of Flowmaster Thermoflows installed, ($245.00 including installation). They're GREAT. Jim Mods so far: K&N filtercharger, Flowmasters, Ed Wright Stage 2 Fastchip. WOW, what a dif.
Years ago when I was buying muffler in the mid 90's
-KBD, I have a test where they lost hp
-Flowmasters and Dynomax were on the bottom of the totem pole in hp gains. (I have no idea about the new flowmasters as they seemed to come out with a lot more products)
-Borla, Power Effects, B&B Triflow all seem to do well.
Corsa has done will in recent test I have seen on C5's.
I am sure someone else can chime in with newer results and products.
I just installed a Power Effects cat back system.
It's great. good power increase, nice sound. A little resonent in the pre 2k rpm area, but you can put them in the closed position to clear that up. The install is mindlessly easy. They are a little more expensive, but fit and finish is perfect. They look pretty mean from the back too.
I can send you some mpegs of the sound if you are interested.
What about the "monza" and 'targa' mufflers in MIDAM and other catalogs?!?! The "Monza" flavors are only $130 a pair!!!!
I assume they are like glasspacks, but don't really know for sure... they look like straight pipes but and would look real 'clean' under the car... Plus, they have that "low, throaty european classic" sound!?!? (whatever that is... ha!!!)
I've never heard anyone talk about them, but they seem to be the cheapest muffler available!!!
I used to use the KBD Targa Black square mufflers from the MidAm catalog. It was not TOO loud at normal drivng, but sounded like a racecar/throaty at WOT. Only thing, they rusted out after less than a year..
Now I run MidAmerica Stainless Steel 2 5/8" round Targa mufflers.
Lost a little on th elow end as they are pretty big, they are a bit loud too even at normal driving, but look pretty good and flow very well.
Not sure of the HP gains, but would love some1 who actually knows..
they are basically straigh glasspacks, without the 'glass' . v :D

Re: Aftermarket Mufflers (88-L98-Z52)
I have the Monza's on my car. It took me awhile to find them, until I looked on the website and realized they're glasspacks.
The previous owner put them on, so I can't really compare them to stock mufflers. But they're loud, and sound pretty nice too. Maybe I can figure out a way to record the sound.
BTW, I get a bunch of resonance above 3500.... but hey, you're only using that when you're tryin to make some noise...
