Default what is this for?

I have an 89 corvette. it has a tuned port injection motor. On the left side of the engine down near the spark plugs, there is an electrical connector. The clips on it are broken so I wanted to replace it but don't know what it is called or what it is for?

If your car has a AUX FAN in front of the condenser/radiator then it's the sender/switch for AUX FAN control. Switch/sender would be between #1 and #3 spark plugs.

It is in between and just above plugs 1 and 3. I just started the car and let it run until the fan kicked in, then shut it off pulled the connector off and started the car again, the fan started right up with the car? I don't want to sound stupid but The only fan I have is the one between the rad and the engine.

There's 2 fans, one behind radiator and AUX if the car has it in front of the cooling module. If the fan you saw running was "behind" the radiator (PRIMARY) that's controlled by the ECM, unless it's been modified by a previous owner. Wasn't a stupid question. Have you checked in front of for a fan assembly?

Ok I opened the engine bonnet and theres a fan staring right at me so I assumed that was the only one. Both ends are broken, the clip on the wire and the piece on the engine block. Do you know if the piece on the engine block just unscrews?

It does BUT leave it "as is" until you determine you have or don't have the AUX FAN and also until you're prepared to do what it takes to repair. I'd say it presents no "immediate need" to mess with.

Where are you located? You mentioned "bonnet" and that's a term not often referenced here in the US unless "imports" are in the discussion.

There should be a SPID label like this on the back-side of the console door. I'd suggest if the car is a recent purchase you inventory the car using the RPO codes as a reference. This one isn't an '89 but can be used as an example.

This isn't the RPO reference I use but it appears to be fairly complete. I've never tried to validate this one in particular. The one I use does all GM including medium and heavy trucks and is more difficult to sort.

wvzr1 has got you covered here, to see if you have the auxiliary fan, parked the car in such a way that you get your head under the front bumper and look up and try to find a fan in front of the radiator.

follow wvzr1 to the T. many of Bubba has messed with the electrical wiring on c4 cooling systems and it's possible you're main and auxiliary fan have been spliced together. wvzr1 pointed that out on my car, that's how i know.

hello from calgary! good luck.

Your setup might look like this:

The connector is the same as for the knock sensor:
