Just bought an '85. Runs and drives good. Occasionally when I shut the key off the motor keeps running! The only way I can get it to turn off is to unplug the wires running to the top of the alternator. Plug them right back in and car starts and shuts off just fine...until the next time it does it. Any clues?
My first thought was the ignition switch(and I guess it could be) but with car running and ignition on if I pull the alternator wire it stays running. With ignition off it dies so it seems as if ignition switch is working

I would start with your ignition switch. They have a tendency to get wonky when they get dirty and a contact gets messed up.
The fact that you pull the alt wire and it dies tells me that your system is running well. When you turn the key "off" and the car runs, tells me that something in your ignition switch is still making contact and telling your engine to keep on, keeping on.
I'd take the ignition switch apart and clean and lube and I bet your will have solved your problem.
