Default Gauge cluster bezel differences

Anyone know what the difference is (other than the part numbers) between a speedo cluster bezel on a '84-'85 part# 14047529 and one for a '87 #14078656 ?

i'm thinking that in 86, they changed the angle of the instrument cluster to reduce glare. that design continued thru to 89.

I think that function and fitment is identical.

Early clusters have a different look in the center window, and a more pointy RPM gauge.

not quite true. from the black book -

(1985)
Electronic instrumentation continued much as the previous year, but displays were revised and improved with cleaner graphics, less color on the speedometer and tachometer, and larger digits for the center-cluster liquid crystal displays.
(1986)
The angle of the 1986 digital instrument display was changed to improve daytime viewing by reducing glare.
by changing the angle of the IP "mounting" a different bezel was required.

note the angle of the speedometer to the bezel (86-89) vs. the 84-85 instruments to bezel -

Thanks Joe. That tells the story. I've probably looked at hundreds of C4's over the years and never noticed this difference.

So with the matching plastic cover both will work in any car? Anyway, I thing that the early one looks better.

not sure what you mean. the dashboard substructure is different between the 84-85 and the 86-89 cars. that substructure defines the angle of the instrument cluster. only 84-85 bezels work with 84-85 cars and 86-89 cars and bezels work together.

from what I understand, 84 IP are unique and one year only. 85's are also one year only. not 100% sure, but 86 thru 88 are interchangeable, and 1989 had different internal PC boards and may be unique.

My dash frame was cracked in several different places. I walked through J&D's yard and picked one out from another car. They removed it for me and I swapped it out with mine. Didn't pay attention to the year of the donor car and had to buy the 84-85 bezel. My 88 bezel wouldn't fit. I kind of like the flat bezel better.

If you have all the parts and it's only cracks you're dealing with, check out http://www.plastex.net/Product_Info.php
I've fixed some cracks and made some missing tabs on mine successfully. Take a look, may be of use to you.
