I used typical auto paint stripper in mine ,It will strip easy off the outside but not in the holes.I would polish and paint inside the holes .I personally dont trust any paint /clear that goes directly over metal without primer ,ecspecially if it has been polished too slick for anything to stick to it.
I used a commercial stripper to remove the old clear coat. Then I used 600 then 1000 grit sandpaper to make it smooth. Next, I used a metal polish to make it shiny. Then I prepped the metal for the paint using a duPont product to remove all the oil and polishing compunds from the metal. I then sprayed two coats of urethane clear. It looked as good as new when I was done.
Just take your time and do it right. I did one wheel each saturday.
Sharky- what was the name of the dupont product to prep the metal? I have some 3 piece BBS wheels I took apart today. Going to repaint the mesh center. Also going to strip the clear from the outer rim portion and polish. What kind of clear did you use, was it specifically for reclearing wheels? Thanks- Scott
