Default Auto Trans Fluid Normal Operating Temp?...

Anyone know what the normal operating temperature range should be for a 700R4 fluid, under normal everyday driving conditions?...And where should that temp be measured(trans pan seems like easiest, and hottest location)?

I understand that with the integral radiator/trans fluid cooler, the trans fluid temperature will tend to equalize at or about the temperature of the engine coolant in the radiator. What is too hot? If external cooler is added, is there such a thing as too cool?

Thanks for any comments.

My electric 700 in a 96 ran 200-210* depending on outside temp and water temp. It went up from there in heavy traffic or with a lot of shifting on hot days and got really warm running hot laps. I think these are fairly typical numbers.

The book says 170-190. Most tranny builders seem to like temps in the 170-180 range too. Cooler is better. I don't racall anyone with a stock C4 having temps this low.

I installed the B&M 24,000 gvw cooler and bypassed the radiator entirely. It runs 160-170 max on the interstate. Never over 195 in town on the hottest day. I would try a thermostat or run through the radiator if I lived in a cooler climate.

You can locate a sending unit in the pan if you are careful. Other options include a remote filter kit that has a port for a sending unit or a fitting that installs in the line close to the tranny (output side).

olephart...Thanks for the input.

I just rebuilt my 700R4...1st trans rebuild for me. Trans has been in the car for about a week, with one trip to the dragstrip and I've been looking at temps of about 170 to 210 Deg F so far.

What is a sending unit for these types of guages?I have heard that almost anything that checks temperatures requires a sending unit..is this simply a temperature sensor? Thanks Jeff

XtremeVette - Guess I'm showing my age. I think we call them sensors now. Anyway, it's the thing on the other end of the wire from the gauge.

Blue85L98 - Those are low temps for a C4. You must have done a good job! I guess it's pretty cool in your area too. Are you measuring the temperature before or after the cooler?

I was told by a highly respected trany builder to put the trans temp in line with the oil cooler. The pan temps are delayed and not as accurate. I bought a remote oil filter kit which has a bung for the oil temp switch in my truck, it was $31 from summit.

I was told to try to keep them under 200 degrees.

A tranny can get too cold, but with tight packaging off a C4 I doubt and reasonable sized tranny cooler I doubt it will be a problem.
