I just went through this same thing and learned that all dana 36s are NOT created equal. There are two different type carriers...a two series and a three series. If you have a 2.xx ratio rear you have a 2 series carrier and can not simply change the ring and pinion to a 3.xx ratio. To do this you will need a 3 series carrier. BUT, there are some companies who make 3.xx ratio ring and pinion sets to fit in a 2 series carrier. I believe the difference is in the thickness of the ring and pinion sets........ie., a 3.xx ring and pinion set is too thick to fit into a 2 series carrier. It sounds kind of confusing, but bottom line is that if you have a 2.59 rear (like I do) you can't simply change out the ring and pinion set for a 3.07 set-up. It may be cheaper to buy a whole center (pumpkin) section and try to sell your existing one. I'm going through the same exact thing right now.
