I am not a mechanic but I am going to try to change out my cruise control servo on my 86 vette. I am wondering if there is anything that I should be concerned about or should I leave this up to a mechanic. Thanks.

No problem you will need a 7mm socket a 11mm wrench, Carefully pull the rubber boot out of way by cable to get to the pull chain and release it (note the amount of slack in chain). unplug, unscrew, install in Reverse.
If when the new Servo is in and if chain doesn't look the same adjust it if needed.
Now why do you think your Servo is bad. Did you check the Vacuum on the small hose and weather or not the large hose is properly sealed to the Brake switch, and holding Vac. when applied

I sent you a reply yesterday from my phone and not sure if it went through or not so I thought I would try again. Thank you for your time and information. I did have all the hoses checked and it does hold vac. I would set the cruise say at 87 mph and it would drop to 86 then back to 87 and so on. At times it would settle down and stay at 87 then it would start all over again and this is all on a level road.
Thanks again.
Rick Dutot.

OK just wanted make sure you Tested Past the Silly things that Happen before Jumping to a part Change, But a Variation of a Couple of MPH in the upper end of Normal Daily Driving, I guess if some of the Internals are getting a little Sticky and Leaky Or the VSS a little Shaky could give a bit of a Fluctuation in speed. Hopefully all will be good after the Servo
Chain Adjustment Chain should have a Little Slack in it. you don't want it tugging on the throttle or Hanging sloppy loose
I'm having that same problem on my 89 auto. CC works but not right. When it tried to keep speed steady, it excellratee much to hard. For example if the speed drops one mph, the CC comes on to advance speed , but too harsh. I think it might be in adjustment but not sure if I need to add slack or tighten up slack

hiw can you tell if servo needs to be replaced?
First make sure larger hose holds vac. smaller has Leak free vac. make sure no cracks in Cruise Bellows Eliminate Oblivious first.
The slack in the chain if it's to loose it limits the amount of throttle range and make the Servo jump to fill the gap, if you have to short it may hold Throttle open a bit screwing with the idle
