well there Daisy...Get a Factory Service Manual, you can find them on ebay or amazon.

Then you need to spend some time going through it, specifically how to diagnose a problem...It really will help you in the long run, and there isnt anything in that book you cannot do yourself

D.

Since you are looking for good guesses, I would suggest you check the TPS. To do this correctly you will need the service manual and the electric manual if you plan on keeping your 85 that you got for free. Here's my well worn manual for my 88 that I have had for many moons.

I would clean the idle air control valve.
Since we have EGR, it gets gunked up occasionally.

And since you have an 85, you have a one year only computer and a MAF control.
Most later cars have a mas air burnoff relay. you have a little box that controls the MAF sensor.
If it goes, you need another one.
Gotta believe that they are really expensive by now.

Also, you have a one year only alternator.
Those are $500 rebuilt. take care of it.

op, u dont have a 1 yr only alternator.
https://www.corvettemods.com/C4-Corvette-1984-1996-Alternators-and-Generators_p_7129.html

here is what u need to do: google the minimum idle set procedure. if you havnt done it, do it.

set you min idle to 550 using the screw, with the iac closed (you will know what this means when u read the min idle procedure).

there was an update for 85 to increase base idle to 500 and mant of is go to 550 during this procedure.

i know the 85 very well. great vettes. do that min idle procedure.

you might want to stop replacing parts until we dial in what the problem. cheers. VT.

while they are one year only, not $500. good cores are $25-$50 - I bought one last year on fleabay for $55.99, w/ $7.19 shipping. (1105585/120 amp, had new brushes, but not rebuilt or restored).

Try leaving the gas cap loose. It could be a vent canister issue (or not) :-)

not trying to nitpick, but 84 and 85 are the same from a form and fit configuration only. from a function standpoint, service replacement alternators, as long as they are 120 amp, are backward compatible. not sure i'd want to take an original 1984, 97 amp assembly and install it on an 85 that was originally spec'd for a 120 amps. my 85, at idle, under full electrical load/max AC, taxes my 120 amp alternator to the limit. most parts vendors take this backward compatibility thing into account and supply 120 amp units. no flames, but you can't make a blanket statement that 84 and 85 alternators are the same.
