When the car is in neutral and just sitting you can hear a rattle. As soon as I push in the clutch pedal it stops. It is not that bad but you can hear it when it is next to a wall or another car. I got the car with 32k on it and I believe that everything is stock. What could this be? Throwout bearing? Is there an "easy" way to fix this? I have to sell the car and I am worried about a prospective buyer being scared off by this. It almost sounds like it's coming from the oil pan. Thanks in advance.
I have a similar problem on my 88. Sounds a bit like a cricket singing, then as soon as you dip the clutch pedal a fraction it stops. My mechanic friend said that it was the thrust bearing and squirted some lubricant through the rubber boot. This stopped it for a while but it came back aferr a week or so. I intend to drop my 4+3 out this winter and I will do a bit more investigation then. I hope one of the more machanically minded posters can sort us out!

If the dual mass flywheel has been replaced with a single mass flywheel, pp, & clutch setup, you are experiencing the gear rattle that comes with a smf. If it is the original equipment dmf, the torsional springs in the flywheel may be losing their tension causing the flywheel to clatter. My 90 has 32,000 miles on it. It sounds like I have a rod knocking, yet it is the dmf. When I put the clutch in, it quietens down, but does not disappear until I let the clutch out in gear.
