Default service ride control light

This light just strted coming on today. I've only had the car for 7 weeks, but never changed the setting from touring. I'm not really concerned that I have the ability to change settings because of the relatively tame driving I do. Any thoughts on what generally goes, that would trigger this light. the car has 67,000 on it. I don't have acces to anything to check the codes, but I probably can find someone if this is what Ill need to do.

Mike, I'm assuming you are referring to the SELECTIVE RIDE CONTROL feature. A malfunction may set trouble codes 12, 13, 14, 21, 22.

A code 12 is normal and just verifies that you are in diagnostic mode. Most likely you have a code 41,42, or 43. Any other code "should" normally set upon start up when the SRC computer runs a diagnostic check.

Pull the codes and let us know what they are and we should be able to help you out better.

Find out how to get your codes. Your car is different than my 89 but basically you'll have to short two pins on the computer connector and then read the SRC light output.

It'll start with one blink then two twice as the start of the diagnostic then the series of codes begins. You could have anything causing your problems including the following, lazy actuator, bad shock, bad switch, bad controller.

Once you get your codes, post them and I'll tell you what you have wrong.

Just an update. Although I haven't had a chance to get the error codes, while I was driving the car with my wife, she asked about the "ride control"light on the dash. I explained as best I could and told her I hoped it would be something minor. I switched the ride control button back and forth a couple times and then put it back on Touring. The next time I started the car, the ride control light went away. I still need to find the code and problem but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Maybe you got lucky with a bad (intermittent) contact on the selector switch. Keep your fingers crossed/

If your car did indeed set a code, for an intermittent, you may still retrieve the code from the CCM.

You need a short length of stiff wire, perhaps a large paper clip or something similar. Your ALDL link is under your knee panel on the driver's side, above the accelerator pedal.

To retrieve CCM codes, you must jumper terminal A to terminal G. The terminals are in this order as you look at the connector:

F E D C B A
G H J K L M

A is upper-right, G is lower-left.

Jumper these terminals. Put the key in the ignition but do not start. Turn the key to "RUN" but do not start. Jump a bit as the fans roar to life, scaring you. Now watch your speedometer display, and write down the module, letter, and number of your codes. Modules are 1, 4, and 9. Letters are C and H, for current or historical. Number codes are the specific faults.

It is an easy five-minute procedure.

Well I retrieved the error codes. I jumped A and C in the ALDL and after the 12 code flashed three times, a 32 code flashed 3 times, the 12 flashed 3 times again. Based on all I've read so far this should mean that 32 is my only error codes registered. The funny thing is when I went for a ride the other day, the "service ride control" stayed on again. While driving, i turned the selector switch in and out of each mode. After I stopped for where I was going, when I started the car up again the light went out normally. I'll have to see what 32 means, and then try to figure why it seems to be intermittent.

Code 32 - Right front out of position. This means that this actuator has not found the end stop on the shock absorber during intitalization. Look for an actuactor not attached properly. If it is in place and looks OK, remove the actuator and try to turn the spline gear on the shock. It should turn move about 1/4 turn. If the shaft moves, replace the actuator, if it doesn't, replace the shock.

I checked this already after referring to the Service Manual. The gear at the top of the shock turns about a quarter turn, which I think is what it calls for. The gear in the actuator looks OK, no apparent worn or broken teeth. I guess I'll have to go with the manual and figure the actuator is gone. Now to find a reasonably priced replacement.

Thanks,
Mike
