Default which cam

I need remove my intake and fix oil leak at the rear and thought while I was doing this to put in a bigger cam.I was wondering does the radiator and all have to come out to replace cam and would I need replace valve springs. Also what cam would be suggesed that would still be streetable and would I need change the ecm chip?Would it be best to go to a perfromance shop to get the scoop?I see alot of you have done engine mods and figured I could get some good input here as what works and what doesn't.It would be nice to get at least 300 hp out of this L98.
Thanks and wave on. \ ////

Also would I need a different stall converter or would stock be ok?And what effect if any would this new cam have on the vacuum for my brakes?
I see guys saying with bigger cam they still getting good gas mileage also.I guess I really need to learn alot about this.

Doing an L98 in the car is tough since the engine has to be tilted up for the cam to clear the front frame member.

Though a good cam would bring about 25-30hp gain, you can get 300hp or a little more from bolt-ons.

An L98 benefits well from thorough exhaust work including, if not headers, then a mandrel-bent 2 1/2" front Y.

Check out my site and that of Vic'89 for some bolt-ons and a few tricks that realy work.

I'm sending you a recipe for L98 mods.

A little higher stall on the TC will help you launch harder and a shift kit will feel great.

Thanks for the help.I am just an old gear head at heart that really likes brute power and excelleration. The newer vettes have around 370hp and I really don't understand why it would be so difficult to get that hp out of an L98.After all it is still a 350.I had a 70 Z28 with 370hp LT1 but I don't know how that hp rating is compared to how it is measured these days. That Z sure did scream though and 8 grand shift was no problem for it.
Thanks again.

Well, other than the usual mods like cam, heads, etc out L98 suffers from the restrictive intake of a 305cid LB9, like is in my IROC. It is in part this tuning that gives the L98 it's low end torque but it also makes it hard to pull up top, where the HP is generated (remember the LT1 has very short runners compared with the L98).

You have numerous choices on how to improve the intake system; you can get to the 360-370hp range with the stock style TPI intake. Though if you want to push RPMs much above 6,000rpm you'll have to go with a super-ram or mini-ram type setup.

Well the above 6 g revs brings another article about the L98 can't take the higher revs without coming apart.I don't know if this is true or not but that was stated I think it was in car and driver about the L98.
How much hp would I gain just changing the intake manifold and would I still be using the t/b or would it require changing to a carb set up which I don't want to do.And would the hood close with manifold you are talking about?
Dang I really need to start checking out the engine mags I guess.
I really appreciate the input as you can see I don't know squat.
Maybe I should leave the vette alone and just buy a camero to hop up.
