Does Header-Wrap Quiet Exhaust Systems?
Was wondering if header-wrap placed on our Front Y-Pipes would kill some resonance they make around 2500rpmÕs?
I just put on a 2.5 inch stainless steel front Y-pipe...and I seem to have picked up a bit more resonance...this is probably normal...I was just curious what header wrap would do...anybody use the stuff before?
thanks jeff
oh yes....I can replace my mufflers and try a different kind...but right now...nah... :jester
Re: Does Header-Wrap Quiet Exhaust Systems? (XtremeVette)
Let me add something here. I guarantee that the wrap WILL make your headers/exhaust pipes rust through much quicker. I've used it on two different cars, wrapping the headers and the pipes up to the converters. On both cars, I had premature header pipe rust-through, and they were quality headers (Hooker). The pipes had accelerated rust too. Don't know if coated headers are immune. The wrap absolutely cuts down on heat in the engine compartment, just as advertised.
I'm guessing that the added heat in the system contributes somewhat, and maybe the wrap holds moisture on the metal. If you look in the ads in Summit and Jegs, they now have a warning that the wrap "may cause" rapid corrosion of the pipes.

The one other problem is, it will hold in excessive heat and make the metal brittle after a few years. The really really bad thing is, it can trap oil and other debris. I've heard first hand accounts of cars catching on fire due to oil dripping on the wrap. Not good. :nono:

Take it from an old drag racer. Exhaust wraps are a no-no, for all the reasons stated above.
Walker sells the pipe after the converter, at least for my '85, which has a crossover pipe between the tubes. Took most of the 2500rpm resonance out of my car.

yup.....my exact thoughts 65Z01...exact.....this weekend gonna be hitting the inside with dynomat and/or other sound deadening material.....hmmmm I wonder.... DO YOU THINK THAT UNDERCOATING MIGHT HELP BOTH INSIDE AND OUSIDE OF THE CAR?
as far as the walker rear y-pipe withh crossover tube....I have that already...hehe
guess that 2.5 inch pipe plus new high flow cat...FLOWS SOOO MUCH BETTER AND UPS THE RESONANCE A TAD...LOL
