Default 383 LT-1.. Too Hot?

Guys, my friedn just finished building a 383 lt-1. It has 11:1 CR, 306 cam, ported heads, exhaust etc..
After a few runs the water temp gets to 225 and the oil temp to 248!!
This is with ac off and both fans running al the time.. 160 deg. thermop as well.. system purged etc...

Is this normal operating temp. for a stroker.. specially the 248 oil temp?
Thanks!

No. A stroker might run a little wamer, but that's not right. Yout might see warmer than average temps as the engine is new, but that still seems high. Your coolant temp should normalize right above the thermostat temperature as long as there is airflow through the radiator.

My 160 thermostat cruises at 174.

If everything else is working properly he most likely doesn't have the proper LT1 thermostat. Those oil temps will cook a non synthetic oil in a heartbeat. If you haven't changed it you might want to.

Do you mean .......runs down the drag strip? .........or runs around the block?.......... if it's runs (passes) down the drag strip ..........I'd think it's ok BUT I'd let it idle with the hood open and the fans running watching the guages before shutting it down. USE SYNTHETIC OIL ......... very important with high oil temps. Now if you're talking about runs around the block or normal type driving.........then yes that's too hot ....... break it in carefully..... :seeya

we are talking a 5 min run around the block. I drove it, and got on it a couple of times, then just cruised it home. When I parked it in the Drive way. I noticed the temps on the dig. readouts.. I thought they were really high, specially when compared to my Zo6, or Zr-1.. Only lt-1 strokers I've seen running that high oil temp have cement on the block, and the coolant temp. is usually very low.. in the 170's.. The builder used Total seal rings...
He also said the car used 1qt. of oil within the first 100 miles..

You probably have already checked to make sure the cooling system is full, no radiator blockage, and thermostat is good. You may want to bleed the air out the system one more time.

You may want to try putting the original thermostat back in to see if that has any impact. Sometimes that can be the problem.

timing should be around 6deg BTDC on that engine, also if you drive in hot weather or run it hard {like road racing} your going to have to upgrade to a large radiator, lingenfelter sells some, ron davis is another, just a big fat aluminum radiator will do the trick. ZR1's stock have the same problem, they just run hotter than hell. radiator upgrades will solve your problem.

Sure, just let us know when you make the timing adjustment kit for the optispark. :D

It doesn't sound right. I cruise at 190-193 water temp w/o AC.
Water temp with AC on in Florida is about 204 city driving.

Mine ran like that when the radiator looked like this.

Cleaned it up, and flushed it out. Added a bottle of water wetter, 50/50 distilled water and antifreeze, and now it runs around 200°.

doesn someoe on the forum ave a really "cool" ;) looking aluminum radiator in their signature? i seem to remember seeing something like that. also, the ignition timing is swet by having the comp reprogrammed. he did get itreprogramed, right? with an engine like that the stock settings would never wok. it could be running lean, causing ti to heat up. just an idea. :seeya:chevy:seeya
