My '84 sometimes will take 4-5 seconds to start when turning the key. Other times it will start on he first crank. Yesterday it took a longer and seemed like it wasn't going to start. I had drove it that day and it was only sitting for about an hour. It's weird, the time it takes to start always differs. Any ideas as to why it does that?
The CFI is notorious for fuel pressure sensitivity. If this situation continues you may want to consider upgrading your fuel pump to a 85-89 model. It will bolt right in your tank with zero modifications.
Also, check your filter as if it is original it may be clogged and creating a bottle neck.

Thanks for the info. I replaced the fuel pump with an '85 pump last summer but I haven't bumped up the fuel pressure yet. When I had my headers installed last month I took a look at the filter and it looked newer from the outside, but that doesn't mean anything. I will look at getting that changed just to be sure.
