I have a '90, the introduction of the infamous fx3 variable suspension. I know there have been a ton of problems with this system, and my error codes read out 14 & 31. I don't think its worth putting the $$ into to fix. So I had the actuators removed, etc. and now its back to a base suspension. Pulled the service indicator bulb at the driver information center. Thank god. Has anyone else done this, or are considering it?
105K miles on my 90 and I'ver never had any problems with the FX-3 system. Luck of the draw I suppose.
I'm planning to rebuild the suspension with polyurethane bushings in the next year and I'll probably send the shocks to Bilstein for an overhaul while I've got everything apart.

:p: Hmm, how'd it get in my '89 then?
Sorry, had to be said... my car was gonna cry. In any case, I've had a few check lights for the fx-3 and it always went away after I checked and cleaned the connections... after almost 14 years they get a little dirty at times.
I like the system, and find it useful. I have the hard shocks when I want, and I can use the soft setting on any ill maintained roads I happen upon.
It may not not take much money to fix. Maybe some contact cleaner and a quality little time. :yesnod: On the other hand, it could be more involved. I guess it boils down to how useful you find it.
I replaced the FX3 Bilsteins with a set of HD Bilsteins. Both rear shocks were blown but the actuators look okay. The front shocks don't show any leakage but the actuators are messed up pretty bad. I'm saving the FX3 shocks and actuators so the next owner, if there is one, will have the option to have them repaired if they wish. I just need to remove the service indicator bulb to finish the job.
Rebuilding the shocks would have been cheaper but I think I would have also had to replace the front actuators, that would have made it more expensive than the route I took.
The ride now is firmer than any of the settings provided before; I didn't realize the shocks/actuators were so bad. I'm happy with how it turned out.
Oly, I think you made the best decision going back to a standard suspension like that. Others have been lucky, it as a well known fact that the FX3 was loaded with problems. Since I bought my vette used, I didn't have the choice but I was very aware of the common condition.
