Default Search: Opti Spark

I realize I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box, but entering the term "opti spark" -or- "optispark" in the search box yields NO results ! So I scroll through the first page of posts & several have the title "opti spark".

They're fixing to put in the third opti spark in my '92. This is getting tiresome & expensive...

You were searching in C4 Tech, right?

One thing about the Opti is that the low-priced versions are just that; cheap in price and quality. It will cost, but tell the shop you want a brand new AC Delco Opti. Some C4 owners have tried the MSD Opti and it seems like that one is not as good as the AC Delco version.

A leaky water pump especially where coolant drips out of the weephole at the bottom is an Opti-killer. Get the shop to install a new WP while they are in there. The WP has to come off anyway. The vented version is also a good idea, and so is adding a drain hose to the WP weephole.

Thank you for the feedback.
Yes looked in the Tech forum.
Putting in a new water pump although old one is good.
Same shop as last time, opti is lifetime warranty & they're going to do a reduced labor.

Hate to burst your bubble on ac delco opti but they are no better than any of the other top rated ones, i have gone through two in the last three years on my 96, 1 duralast and 1 ac delco the last one was ac delco and it bit the dust backing out of the drive way, opened it up and found a screw had come loose, and shaft and rotor were not aligned straight also the seal leaked and oil got inside so quality control is an issue even with name brand, finally went with petri , good company they back there product and still running great after 2 months, fingers crossed..decided not to send it back and just use if for trouble shooting.

There is a guy on eBay that uses MSD housings with original NOS Mitsubishi optical sensors. Look him up (Type in Mitsubishi Optispark). That is what I would buy if I needed an opti right now.

Even tests them prior to shipment.

Research SacCityCorvettes - http://www.saccitycorvette.com.

May be as good as any on the market. Going on 5 years in my '92.

For what it's worth, I installed an AIP from SacCity in my 1994 when I did my build. It's been fine for over a year. The original AC Delco had 50k on it and seemed to work fine. I put a new rotor and cap on the original, put locktite on the rotor screws, sealed it up with RTV and it's sitting on my bookshelve until I need it. I installed a new Gates WP when I did the build, too.

total bologna.

an oem ac delco optispark, with mitsubishi optical sensor is the best choice out there.

there was a design flaw in the 92-94 - they need a custom vent added like the later gen 2 95-96 style.

if you dont add the vent, then yes even a genuine ac delco opti will fail.

i also question whether this poster really had a genuine ac delco optispark bc they havent been available from the dealer in 10 years. (that said, you can still find them on ebay, junkyards, or parts for sale sections of many forums - the vette wasnt the only car that used the lt1)

if you go to the dealer and ask for an ac delco optispark, they will give you a remanufactured in china optispark, in an ac delco box

so there is a lot of confusion about what is a genuine oem new old stock ac delco optispark

Are you suggesting that the optical sensor technology used in the 1992 opti 25 years ago is still the best available today?

I started working for IBM in 1956 as a salesman. There were no computers, just accounting machines run by punch cards, and wired boards. IBM equipment was powered by vacuum tubes, as transistors were new technology. Technology in the following years changed/improved about every six months making products obsolete accordingly.

To think that today's optis, using new optical sensor technology, are not a significant improvement over the ACDelco of 25 years ago is ludicrous.

yes i sure do!

this technology has not moved forwards, only backwards.

nobody cares about an interim gm engine no longer produced anymore.

in this world of corporate greed, no one cares the only question being asked (by people making this electronic piece ) is:

how can we make it cheaper ?
