Default Are Instrument Clusters Interchangeable?

Is a cluster from an 84 or 86 the same as an 89?

I'd suggest you mention what year yours is and ask what will exchange. I don't believe there's any mention anywhere I've seen that says YES to all.

I'd mention year and also if you've had your cluster out post the part# on yours that you removed.

I assume you're asking because you need one.

If you're looking to sell use the part# of what you've got and post all that information so buyers could make their own decision.

I do know the instrument cluster bezel is different between the 84 and 86 but I believe that's due to the angle the instrument cluster mounts in the dash but do not know for absolute certainty that's the only difference.

Mine is 89 and works intermittently.
I had to pick up a gas pedal from a guy last weekend that was parting out what he thought was an 84 but the title says it's an 86. He gave me the cluster for $10 so if it works in my 89 how could I go wrong.

He said it was working when he drove it home.

The cluster if it's not installed should have likely a label with a part# - I'd expect likely and 8 digit # that might start with 2507 or 2508

2507xxxx or 2508xxxx - xxxx being various number combination. Bits and pieces of the internals are different year to year. I don't recall seeing an interchange for an early C4 but I've never owned one.

The only one that actually comes to mind is an '89 ZR-1 cluster a fellow was walking around with in his hand @ Carlisle in maybe '04 or '05.

to answer your question, the answer is NO. 84 clusters are one year only for the graphics. 85's are also one year only, HOWEVER, i'm fairly sure 85 and 86 are interchangeable. I really don't know what the difference is - different, but interchangeable (???). i'm thinking 87 and 88 are interchangeable. 1989's internals are slightly different having the power supply integrated into the main circuit card, so i'm thinking 1989 may be one year only from a wiring standpoint. finally, thought I read something about clusters having or not having "cruise control" circuitry, so that would be another factor to consider. I seem to recall reading that "cruise" clusters will work in non-cruise cars, but not the other way around (makes sense). finally, i'm thinking some years have 2 wire vs. 3 wires on the odometer motors, but I do not know the year by year breakdown. the OP should not take anyone's advice here as gospel, including mine. email bryan at batee - he should be able to give you the straight poop on differences and interchangeability. www.batee.com
