Are you using the Dual Sync distributor and ignition box to allow the computer to control your timing? I used that set up on an 86 and didn't have any issues with timing. I know you have to be careful on having a good connection and shield the computer away from high voltage. I put my computer in the area on drivers side under the headlight and the MSD box on the passenger side under the headlight. I created a bracket for the coil on the passenger side right next to the hood latch.
