Just high enough to get yourself under the car safely. I believe the hex wrench is 17mm. There is a post on here that will let you know how much fluid to put back in.
Yep. It's a 5 or 6 sided hex socket. They're sold in a pack of 3 at Auto Zone, with 15, 16 and 17 mm sizes all in one pack. I think it was $8 for the whole set. Unfortunuately, the 17mm is not sold individually, and I can't think of any reason why I'd need a 15 or 16mm hex, so I just chunked them in my neighbor's yard.
To fill up the tranny, take the plastic console out of the interior that surrounds the shifter, lift up the right side of the rubber shift boot, and run a hose down the opening. Put that end in the tranny, and put a funnel on the end that's inside the car. Pour in 2.2 quarts. There will be a little oil left in the hose when you're done, because part of it dips below the fill hole. Blow into the end of the tube, and it'll go into the tranny. It's a pretty simple job.

You don't have to tear into your interior. With a 99 cent bottle spout and 3 feet of hose, you can do it from underneath. Simply open the spout, hold the bottle upside down and squeeze it. When about half of the bottle enters the transmission, release the bottle so it can gulp air and repeat. Alternately, you can use an old gear lube bottle with 3' of hose pushed onto it's "classic" pointed cap lid.

Re: ZF oil change (larryfs)
I refilled with the Castrol (BMW) synthetic - shifting never felt smoother.
The refill procedure I used was a 3' hose threaded behind the engine, down the firewall. I used 3/8" hose with a funnel taped to one end. The hose was way too small - it took forever. :( You're better off using a larger size.
Access to the tranny was simple due to the hoist. :D
Make life easy on yourself and raise the car up over your head and work standing up...also get 2 new plugs from GM...put thread sealer on the plugs...just use the GM transmission fluid...it needs to be changed every 30,000 miles anyway...
Remove the fill plug before you drain the transmission. Some folks have drained the oil only to discover they can't remove the fill plug! My drain plug is messed up from bouncing over speed bumps.... even though I drive very slowly over them. Sears sells the 17 MM allen wrench separately.
HAD MINE DONE LAST WEEKEND....RAISE THE CAR IN THE AIR...ITS EASIER....MY MECHANIC USED THE HOSE ATTAHCED TO A USED OIL BOTTLE TRICK. ITS JUST A LITTLE BIT OF A PAIN TO KEEP SQUEEZING THE BOTTLE. ALSO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THE HOSE DOES RUN UP TO GET TO THE FILL HOLE TO WHEN YOU SWITCH BOTTLES BE SURE NOT TO LET THE HOSE DNGLE OR YOU WILL BE SORRY.....HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE TRANNY....I USED THE GM STUFF.....WOULDN'T TRY ANYTHING ELSE....VERY HAPPY WITH IT

Just a few things. The juice... my tranny had the GM oil in it, I changed to the BMW oil, and it's much smoother now. Doing it how it was mentioned above, hose threaded from under hood down firewall to underneath works best. If you use the "hose on the bottle tip" technique, and the hose blows off, nice mess to clean up! I've used clamps, tape, and even silicone and superglue to hold that hose on the bottle in the past, and more often than not, wound up cleaning up Exxon Valdez! And the whole "pulling the interior apart" idea, oh boy! Let me see, 10W60 oil, leather seats, perfect interior, a slight mishap, I'm shooting people in the local McDonalds! Sorry for the inference there, but not too good of an idea, at least for me, you might have better luck. The "hex" is called an ALLEN, and Sears is your best bet. They also carry the large metric socket for the rear spindles. Everything above is IMO, just trying to help out! Good luck! :seeya
