Default voltage?

I was not sure if I should have put this in as a new thread - . . .

I had ordered a powermaster 120 amp alternator for replacement and a rebuild kit just in case- also for the sake of wanting to know how and if I could ($13) there were a few issues with the power master -so they are sending a new one for exchange -

the long and the short - the lights do not flicker any longer after I rebuilt the old delco - however, the volts now only read 11.4 - 11.7 and they have a red light next to them - I am presuming that's not a good red light?

the volts read steady between those numbers when driving - but I went from 14.3v before to 11.4 - ish should I be concerned? the battery is roughly 6 months old. I am going to put a charger on it to see what happens - but that seems like quite a change

any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated

Sean

I dunno what others will say, but to my knowledge a properly working alternator puts out around 14 volts. I think it sounds low also.

Is the battery deeply discharged?

I am not sure - with what looked like a bad voltage regulator before the rebuild I was getting readings as high as 15+ I was not sure if the dash was giving me issues or the alt. I suppose it could have been in worse shape than I thought -

but just to check the alternator is only there to help maintain battery volts correct?

thanks

I forgot to mention 1985 is the year

Whenever my volts didn't match, it was the charging system. But I guess it doesn't have to be.

You can put a meter on it and compare to the dash?

You should have a no load or light load voltage reading of 14-14.5 volts. I'd check with a meter at the battery. High voltage over 15.5-16 can be a shorted field or bad regulator.

I don't know what kind of rebuild kit you have but a rebuild should include bearings, brushes, voltage regulator and rectifier. Checks need to be made of the field, stator and slip rings to make sure they're good. You can check almost everything with a good manual and a DMM.
