So we are starting up and running a 94 corvette that has been garaged for about 16 years. We replaced all fluids, cleared all mouse houses, new battery, new fuel and filter. Started up fine, but transmission was a little odd. Would shift when it shouldn't and had a travelling "out of gear" issue. Sometimes first gear sometimes others. We seemed to put more than the normal amount of ATF in but when we got a good dipstick reading the problem seems to have settled in third gear. It is like it is freewheeling. Now I know there are lots of threads talking about this common problem with a variety of solutions. Our question is this....if it worked when it was garaged why would the 3/4 clutch pack go out now or is there something else that could cause this from sitting for that long.
I dunno what to say about that. NORMALLY, when you flare on the 3/4 it's done.. But it sat for so long, who knows? You could have stuck controls after 16 years and maybe you're not getting there?
Thanks so much for the reply!
I am going to pull codes tonite and will post back. It has fresh fluid and filter...are you saying change it out again? Could this be a 2/3 solenoid or a governor or do you guess it is the 3/4 clutch pack. I am not sure if I have 4th or overdrive because I am not sure how to get "past" 3rd. I know there is no 3rd when using "D" or 3 on the shifter. Can I check anything else?
Well, the big thing is the flare.. Not shifting into 3rd and flaring out are different things.
If you just have a freewheel condition, that is common and associated with a burned 3/4. But, a failure to shift can feel similar to people who haven't experienced it.
A failure to shift can be a couple of things. According to the info I have here (But I mainly fix trucks. It's an AG area) you should have the E unit in 94, and there is no hydraulic governor on those, but there are some electronic controls and most of them will set an error code when they fail.
So it sounds like I should start with the codes...right?
This may sound like an obscure thought BUT - You say you cleaned out a bunch of mouse nests. It has happened before and if the mice chewed the cable leading to the transmission, you could be missing some commands from the ECM. I would check it closely and follow it through from end to end. Remote possibility but possible.
..... Could it be that the transmission issue is why it was garaged 16 years ago ? .....
Possible if it weren't for the last sentence in his first post where he says "...if it worked when it was garaged why would the 3/4 clutch pack go out now..."
Yes...and no.
The car was/is my father in laws and he gave it to us. It is certainly possible but highly unlikely that he would look to "gift" a headache and money pit to his grandson. Good thought. It might have been on its way out but not dead.
