I just bought a 1993 corvette and a message appeared on the dash where the mileage should be. It reads "VOLT". What does this mean? Battery problem? ALternator?

It sounds as if maybe you were randomly pressing the "GAUGES" button on the DIC. That will I believe on a '93 vary to either HI VOLT or maybe LO VOLT and maybe even the actual VOLTage the CCM/Cluster sees. I've never owned a '93 and earlier '90 - '92 I don't believe had the option to display!
Do you have an owners manual? See page 111 for an explanation.
Here's a Canadian link to the '93 OM. I use cdn information from time to time for all GM. It is also available from My Chevrolet also.
I have a 92 and it does have the same function. The Gauges button on the DIC cycles through various data elements. Volts, Cool, Oil. Each displays what the ECM is reading for that parameter. When volts is displayed, you should see a value for the electrical system left and below the MPH (or KPH) reading.
The values will be consistent with the measurement system setting selected with the ENG/MET
The digital values are the ones you need to monitor. The analog gauges are not accurate. When the cars left the factory there was a sticker stating such on the lower right of the cluster.
