....the procedure when you smog your car where testing involves a dynometer (rollers)? At what speed (mph) is the test done besides the traditional dual idle speed test? How can I pass if I don't have a 4+3 tranny...I have the 6 spsd.
WHen mine was done they took it up to 55 mph on the rollers and held it there for a little bit. The guy "driving" kept trying to shift into 6th at 50mph though almost killing the car...
Anyone else that can offer input? I'm worried that since my 85 doesn't have the stock 4+3 tranny (its got a 6pd now) that SOMEHOW it won't pass the test on the rollers. (because now the ECM doesn't control the tranny) TIA
The test you are asking about is called IM-240. It's done on a dyno because that's the only way they can load the engine to read NOX.The IM -240 test uses a simulated drive cycle. The procedure involves: a visual inspection, A tailpipe emissions test while the vehicle runs on the dynamometer, an evaporative emission test that does a system purge flow test while on the dyno, an evaporative system integrity test (leak test) done before or after the dyno tests, and on 96 and newer cars an OBD II systems test. Now there is also anASM test that uses steady speed to check emissions. The IM 240 is the harder to pass because the person doing the testing has to follow a simulated drive cycle and if that person isn't familiar with the vehicle being tested the vehicle could fail. I have seen this happen on a freinds Ford Ranger pickup. Then HE took the wheel and got it through. The only reason that was possible was because the owner of the vehicle was an instructor and knew the person doing the test and talked the tester into it. Like I said they were freinds.......... so that's the deal .........good luck with it :seeya
I have an 89 6 speed and the test was administered in mostly 2nd gear at really high RPM's. I asked the guy about that and he said it was better to keep the RPM's up.
My car registered a 0 on NO and in the lowest 3% range on CO. The guy said it had the best score of any car that age he had ever tested.
Unless you have monkeyed around with the emmissions equipment you ought to be okay.
WOW!!! ZERO nox?............I wonder if they were checking it. either that or they didn't load the dyno.............. at stoke the car SHOULD put out SOME NOX........ :seeya
A friend of mine, who works for Texaco, says that he made his car pass New Jersies (I dont know the similarity) by a suggestion from chemist at Texaco. Use a quart of alcohol to 4 gallons of gas. The car will run, but it will pass with flying colors. Make sure you put regular Super unleaded in after you get done, if you are worried. Steve
Actually, I'm more worried that I have a close ratio 6speed. I mean, will the technician fail me because its not a 4+3? ...and will the lower ratio gears be a problem?
