Default power steering Q

hey everyone

while working on my '85's alternator I noticed the power steering hose and pump are pretty wet. I had noticed fluid on that side of the motor and thought I had an oil leak, but after seeing this, I think the power steering fluid is getting sprayed back from the fan.

I guess my questions are - do I change the hoses and see how it goes?

change everything (that may have to wait for more $)

can I let it go for a little while and ride it out - if so how long ?

It leave maybe a couple of small drops on the garage floor now and the fluid level was barely at add. steering works well - no issues at the moment.

any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Sean

almost forgot - changed fluid and flushed system in the spring - I do not recall that much over spray from flushing and I would guess it would have burned off by now?

I'd say you "clean and observe" - if the power steering has been serviced recently I'd think it very easy to distinguish the difference in engine oil and PS fluid.

Clean and observe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like that option best - sounds like a plan - where that is - I should be able to spray a little engine cleaner/degreaser and light mist of water - there is nothing electrical right there is there?

thanks

How difficult are these pumps to rebuild? gaskets, bearing, o-rings? - -special tool required besides the $40 puller/replace - for the pulley? I am not in any hurry - just curious

Clean everything off and dye the PS oil. Don't chase it till you know what it is.

Is a rebuilt pump available? If so, I'd get a rebuilt unless you are in NCRS or something where you need to be original.

I don't understand the conversation going towards pump replacement -

The "clean and observe" I'd think the first move, if you can't confirm where then you might use the "dye", never the dye first - if you've got leaks created by o-ring issue on the hoses buy "CORRECT" Saginaw seals not "generics".

can I use a degreaser like a gunk stuff or simple green? - or is there something safer or better?
I am going to move the alternator to get in there later today so I can keep the electric stuff out of the way

thanks

I'd be tempted to maybe use something like aerosol "Brake-Kleen" or a similar parts cleaner because that will will evaporate.

How large is this suspected leak!

that's a good question - I really cannot see the whole area - and I cannot tell how much has been blown back - perhaps 6"-8" square? the hose looks wet but I will wipe that down and watch to see how wet it looks after that.

Brake clean is ok to use - ? will evaporate before anything gets hot?

I figured that I could clean it, let it dry, drive and then take a look to see how its doing. I was just going by what I thought I have in the garage - I did not think about brake clean.

thanks
