Default Interior door handle trim insert 1992

can someone tell me what the screw that holds this piece in fastens to? There is an inch gap behind it and nothing there that is threaded to take a screw. The door handle bezel is loose. That one screw holds it in but there isn't anything I can see to fasten it to. Thanks in advance.

Your door panel should fit flush against the door frame. You might want to try and "re seat" the door panel and try again.

Any easy "hang up" causing a door to not sit flush is the door lock rod. This needs to be "snaked" though the panel before you try and hang it on the top of the door frame.

I haven't had the door panel off before. So I guess whoever had the car before me had it off and didn't put it back correctly. Looks like this is going to be a learning experience. Any advice before I take it off and try to put it back correctly?

I did a window sweep project about 2 weeks ago so the door panel are burned into my eyes. If your sweeps are shot, you might as well consider doing them.

This is a pretty straight forward job. I'd get a piece of cardboard and punch holes in it to organize your screws when you take the door off. There will be several difference sizes (7mm and Phillips head) so you dont want to mix them up. The wiring can be a bit tricky so just take your time.

When assembling, snake your door lock rod first, hang the panel from the top and start your screws in the middle first and work outward, leaving the bottoms for last.

While "in there" tape, foam and route your wires so they don't rattle.

Do you have a shop manual (yet)?

I don't have a manual. Unfortunately half the screws were already missing. Someone before me put a stereo system in it and really did a number on the door panels. They are loose with missing screws.

If if it was assembled correctly I could at least know how it goes back together. But this is take what parts I have and try to see how it was originally. Lol.

Thanks for for the replies. I'm sure I will need more advice as I go along.

Finally got it back together! Had to use an assortment of screws but it looks good and the panel isn't loose now.

Thanks for the replies! I would still be chasing a part that doesn't exist without the help.
