I got ready to change the front pads and rotors on my 93.
I was surprised it only has one pin. My pins have "slop", like the pin is too long. So I ordered new pins from rock auto, but they were the same length as the old one. I could shim it with a few washers, but i really don't want to do that on my corvette. Does the e-clip go on the outside or inside? Has anyone else ran into this? I have searched the forum, but don't see any.
THANKS

e-clip outboard and you need no shimming - an OE/GM caliper kit many years ago I believe was serviced with pin, clip and a washer. If you'd like a washer fine but it's not used for shimming.
The pin is 1/4 " longer than it needs to be. I see it is put in backwards, for some reason(eclip inboard) I hope this fixes it_ as well as some strange noises coming from the front brakes. Previous owner may have done it. The one I ordered was a Wagner from Rock Auto, it came with out the eclip

I don't have any loose pins but I'd think that the pin is 5/16 or very close which should make the groove diameter .250. An RE-031A I believe is either exact or very close spec for the e-clip. Many buy just very generics from the usual "local" suppliers. I'd think you're interested in either a Zinc finish or maybe better.

Take a new pin with you!
The e=clip does go on the inside, I watched a video

Really? Clip falls off, pin vibrates out and the wheel spokes do what to the caliper, wheel etc. Vibrates and falls out to inside it wanders off with likely none or little damage.
That diagram does show the pin inserted from the inside, with clip outside. Thank you VWZR-1. I need to change mine around, someone prior to my ownership replaced them the wrong direction.
Also the clips on my pins don't look like circlips, they look like E-clips. Same thing?
Can anyone confirm that the rear calipers do not have a retainer pin? Mine's a 1995 with HD brakes.

My '93 FSM states that the pins are different depending on the caliper (base JL9 or heavy duty J55). It also says that repair kits came with two pins; one for base brakes, the other for the HD J55 brakes. But that was back in '93. Could be now that just a single pin is provided and could have some "slop" when installed.
And it does say that the clip goes to the outside. Guess I'll have to reverse the pins on my '93 The prior owner did a J55 upgrade as the car came with the base brakes.
As far as the rear brakes, the calipers do not use a single pin. They use two guide pins that have small bolts to attach the guide pin to the caliper. There are rear caliper pin sets sold on Rockauto that include the guide pins, bolts, and rubber dust boots.

That's what I hoped to hear... I was checking the rear calipers for slider pins similar to the front and none found. But I did find those small bolts (hard to remove) securing the larger guide pins. After finally getting those small bolts out, everything was still greased due to the dust boots being effective. Still added some fresh synthetic caliper grease anyway just because.

I believe that some/most of the after-market pins are "dual-grooved" for both base and J55 brakes. Maybe the OP can comment on the pins he bought. I've never had anything other than a J55 brake package so I paid no attention. I've never needed to buy any.
Every car I've taken apart with the J55 brakes had the clip on the inside. My ZR-1 and GS had the original pads and low miles when I bought them. I do see what the diagrams say though?

Mine are "outside" and a couple other cars I've seen were outside also. How were they assembled from PBR for the "drop-on" BGR assembly line? My '90 was barely 22K miles when bought and I'm sure/or thought they were original. Maybe not!!
It only makes sense to use the outboard retention - you can see it! Ease of assembly and depending upon the wheels used a quick glance and you're all set.
** I poked around a little and I see some FOMOCO images of the PBR with the "pin head" out-board but I've never seen a FOMOCO FSM that showed assembly.
