Those are a full 4" taller than the original 255/50r16 tires on early C4s, and even the difference is even bigger compared to some of the 17" tire options on later C4s. Even if it doesn't rub the hood or fender liner, it will look like an off-road vehicle. Plus I don't think there are any performance tires in that size - only truck and SUV tires. It would be horrible to drive! Don't do it.

If it's because of availability of 255x50zr16, if you're willing to change rims too, I just put 255x40zr18's on my 86 also changing the rims to comparable 18's. They fit just like the original size tires/rims did.
According to the Tire Rack website, the BF Goodrich G-Sport Comp-2 tire in 255/50-16 will be available towards the end of August. If you can wait until that time, this tire will be a good selection and value for the money.

Can also find Mirada Sport GTX - 255/50R16 somewhere, though many vendors are out of stock. I have them on mine, from my PO; they work okay.
Going to 18" and 255/40R18 keeps the dimensions the same with a higher rim, not change to speedo etc needed. There are a lot more choices as well. Skip 17", that size ends up different dimensions.
Also a lot of +40 offset choices for us '84 -> '87 folks!

That's what I did to my 86 back in Feb. They work and fit great.
