Default open rear hatch - no power.

Do C4's have a hatch release cable? I need to open the hatch, engine is out of the car. Dont want to cycle the key to accessories.

No need to "cycle the key", simply connect the battery and you should have power to the hatch release buttons. Just ensure the battery cable at the starter is well insulated.

You could also just do that /\ just make sure you pull your fuel pump fuse or you'll have gas every where!

There is a small steel cable under the carpet just below the hatch mechanism. Grab it with pliers and pull. I've pulled an engine in one of these, no way would i tape off everything and connect a battery.

Probably could connect all the grounds to the battery and ground to frame but I would just play it safe and pull the cable

This should be enough to get your hatch open:

I personally would not cycle the key. the ECM is grounded to the engine block (via the LH cylinder head). applying power to the ECM without a ground will damage some functions within the ECM itself. electrons are funny - they WILL seek out another path. don't let the metal case of the ECM fool you - that case is not a chassis ground, as I found out. spoken with real "dumb-***," hands-on experience!

to be on the safe side, just pull the emergency release cable.
